The first trim I want to show is Ruching. The women's sack-back gowns and the men's coats over long waistcoats are characteristic of this period. A key motif was the boteh or pine cone, what we know today as the paisley. Every time I raised my arms or stood up from a chair, there was a gap between the jacket and the skirt. Ornamentation consisted of embroidery, cut-work, matching ruffles and ruching, and puffs (or matching appliquéd fabric filled with small bits of batting. Even though 18th century garments were often left quite unfinished inside-some are a downright mess!-I'm just not a fan of raw seams.

Flashback ten years to making a gauze-trimmed 18th century wedding gown. It was very common on gowns and petticoats in the 18th century. Every element of this doll's dress was on the original lady's dress from the 18th century. How historically accurate is it? Maybe 40% if I'm stretching it. The ruffles could be wide or thin, and were really popular from about 1770-1790.
